Upper Arkansas River (between Leadville and Buena Vista) -
Access on the Upper Ark north of Buena Vista is extremely difficult during the winter months with lots of snow and rim ice on the banks, mixed with frozen sections of river. This section usually starts to become accessible in March. In the meantime, when air temperatures are favorable, the Upper Ark can be fished south of Buena Vista with stonefly and other typical nymph rigs. Make sure you are deep and on target, as trout will not move far for food in the winter months. On warmer days midge action on top is not uncommon during the warmest part of the day.
